Jazz Band
Founded in 1947 in Paris by clarinetist Pierre ATLAN, the HIGH SOCIETY JAZZ BAND is, with the DUTCH SWING COLLEGE (Netherlands, founded in 1945) and some American orchestras, one of the oldest orchestras in the world still in operation. While many musicians took turns around Pierre MERLIN, who left us at the age of 82, the spirit and style did not change: to preserve enthusiasm and humour, and to put in light the oldest repertoire of New Orleans jazz, from 1900 to 1930 (including ODJB and King Oliver).
Through its long history, the HIGH SOCIETY JAZZ BAND has participated in many TV shows, favorite among others of Jean-Christophe AVERTY and Jacques CHANCEL, as well as in major world festivals, including those of NEW ORLEANS (U.S.A. 1972), BREDA (Netherlands 1976 and 1984), PERUGIA (Italy, 1986), ESSEX and CENTRAL CITY (U.S.A. 1988), EDINBURGH (Scotland 1989), ASCONA (Switzerland, 1998), NICE (1974), BOULOGNE-BILLANCOURT (1983 and 1985), RAMATUELLE (1989), Festival d'ÎLE-DE-France (1990), VAULUISANT (1991), VOLLORE (2003), MONTLUÇON (2004), NICE (2007) and LUNERAY (2009).
It has also performed in concert in many French cities, in Switzerland, in the United States (Wallingford, Chicago, New Orleans, San Antonio), and has hosted in Paris places like the BOFINGER brewery, the LOUISIANA restaurants and the TAVERN DES CHAMPS, and jazz cellars or pubs such as the RIVERBOAT, the CAVEAU DE LA MONTAGNE, the SLOW CLUB, the CAVEAU DE LA HUCHETTE...

The orchestra won the 1977 SIDNEY BECHET PRIZE from the Académie du Jazz.
